Under the title “Is This Allowed? When Humor Leads to Controversy and Censorship,” the European Cartoon Center presents recent cartoons with painful backstories.

All over the world, cartoonists are being threatened, fired, or imprisoned because of the sharpness of their pencils. Even in our own country, cartoons spark controversy, diplomatic incidents, and editorial refusals to publish them.

Is freedom of expression under pressure? Are we taking everything too seriously? Are we living in a culture of fear?
